BRANDS NEED TENSION, NOT MORE POLISH

Notes from the Roman Labs archive on keeping function clear without polishing the character out of the work.

VISUAL SPECIMEN / 005

Notes from the Roman Labs archive on keeping function clear without polishing the character out of the work.

01 / OBSERVATION

THE INITIAL CONTAMINATION

Most useful work begins in an inconvenient state: incomplete references, conflicting goals, an ugly prototype, and one detail nobody can stop thinking about. That contamination is often the useful part. It tells us where the energy is before a system has flattened it.

02 / OBSERVATION

CONTROL THE REACTION

Structure does not have to sterilize an idea. A strong grid, a direct hierarchy, and clear operating rules create enough control for stranger decisions to survive. The goal is not random visual noise. The goal is a system with pressure inside it.

03 / OBSERVATION

LEAVE EVIDENCE

The final object should still reveal something about how it was made. A hard crop, an exposed line, an awkward phrase, or a material edge can keep the work human. Remove confusion, but do not remove every trace of friction.
